The Men’s Community Initiative was established in June 2011 and is based at Áras Inis Gluaire. By implementing this programme in Erris, we are responding to a request by Pobal who identified the need for such services among men over 55 in rural areas. We have a full time Community Officer Lorraine Wilson who is coordinating this initiative.
The aim is to develop a programme of activities for men over 55 which will range from day trips to classes, male related health awareness events, workshops and so on.
It is not a club and there is no upper age limit! You are under no obligation to take part in all our activities and events, you can simply choose whatever interests you.
We hope to keep this interesting and varied and provide a wide range of activities which might appeal to men. In July we ran buses to the Erris Agricultural Show with an afternoon meal provided. In September we hosted a Men’s Heart Health Awareness Event in association with the Irish Heart Foundation.
From October through to December we have been running weekly Beginner’s Computer Classes on Monday nights. Also, we have weekly Swim and Gym sessions on Thursday afternoons at Éalú Leisure Centre in the Broadhaven Bay Hotel.
A second set of Beginner’s Computer Classes will start on Monday 16th January 2012 at 7pm and run for ten weeks. Intermediate class at 8pm for those who have completed the Beginner’s class and wish to progress. Held in the Údarás na Gaeltachta training rooms at Áras Inis Gluaire.
Swim and Gym sessions at the leisure centre will resume on Thursday 12th January from 3pm to 5pm.
Traditional arts and crafts projects with artist in residence here at Áras Inis Gluaire and through outreach work in different communities around Erris.
Day trips to various events and places of interest.
Siar an Mbóthar... Project with Iorras FM community radio station. In line with other community radio stations in rural Ireland, we aim to dedicate programmes to the reminiscing of days gone by & build an archive of history from the area. Volunteers are needed to come along and share their stories & memories of Erris.
